CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2014) – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship contender Joey Logano and Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Marcus Smith joined more than 75 breast cancer survivors and supporters to paint the pit road wall pink as the speedway kicked off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and race monthon Wednesday.
“It’s a special time because we get to kick off October,” said Smith. “It’s race month for us here at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and it’s also a time we can recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So many people are touched by breast cancer and this is a way we can recognize, draw attention and encourage our friends and family.”
In total, crews used 80 gallons of paint provided by PPG Porter and Glidden Paints to cover more than 6,000 square feet of pit wall.
Logano also announced a $5,000 donation on behalf of The Joey Logano Foundation to Carolina Breast Friends, a local community group that provides support and outreach for breast cancer survivors in the Charlotte region.
In addition to painting the pit road wall pink in an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment, the speedway announced a new entitlement sponsor for the NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Oct. 10. For the next three years, the pivotal fall race will be called the Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.
While Wednesday’s activities were focused on painting pit wall, next weekend Logano will turn his attention to the high banks of the legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway as NASCAR gets set for the Bank of America 500, the only Saturday night race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.
“This race is going to be very important – even more important than last year,” the Team Penske driver said. “If you look at the next three races in this group, you’ve got Kansas, Charlotte and Talladega. You’ve got to have two good finishes – at Kansas and here in Charlotte. If you can get a win here at Charlotte, knowing that you’re going to Talladega, which is the biggest wild card of all time, that you can get something good out of here and secure a place in the next round, that would be a dream come true.”
From knockout qualifying on Thursday to the Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina on Friday and the only Saturday night race in the Chase, the Bank of America 500, fans can catch all the fun with weekend packages starting at just $99.
