The road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway could include NASCAR action this season, multiple sources tell CATCHFENCE.com.
The proposed 2.3-mile circuit which would include portions of the track’s 1.5-mile asphalt layout is proposed to be used in either May’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series All-Star event or this fall’s Bank of America 500 event, the opening race in the second round of NASCAR’s Chase format.
Last Friday, A.J. Allmendinger in a JTG-Daugherty Racing-prepared Chevrolet, tested the circuit putting the once concept into reality mode approaching the start of the 2017 NASCAR season.
The test, according to sources, was a collaborative effort between Charlotte Motor Speedway and NASCAR.
If NASCAR elects to utilize the fall race for road course competition, the XFINITY Series which also hosts their own “Chase” format could utilize the same format.
NASCAR fans have craved for a dose of road course racing to appear in NASCAR’s playoff system, after the sport’s two other road course events of Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International, have produced some of the sport’s most intriguing and unpredictable moments in recent years.
