2018 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series champion Brett Moffitt is going to have a busy start to the 2020 NASCAR season.
Our Motorsports, a new NASCAR Xfinity Series team owned by Chris Our announced Thursday that the organization has tapped Moffitt to drive the team’s No. 02 Chevrolet in the season-opening race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 15.
In addition to Daytona, Moffitt will drive for the team during the NASCAR Xfinity Series West Coast Swing at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway, Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway and Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway respectively.
Earlier this week, Our Motorsports hired industry veteran Joe Williams to serve as crew chief.
“I am really excited about this opportunity with Our Motorsports to get back into the Xfinity Series,” said Moffitt in a press release.
“Chris (Our), Andy (Seuss) and Joe (Williams) have all been working really hard to get this team up and running for the 2020 season. With the support and blessing from (GMS president) Mike (Beam) and Maury (Gallagher, team owner) at GMS Racing, it’s going to be a lot of fun getting to race with Our Motorsports for the first four races this year.”
Moffitt, a native of Grimes, Iowa has three prior Truck Series starts at Daytona International Speedway, but none in the Xfinity Series. While he has led nine laps from 2017 to 2019, Moffitt has found himself collected in various accidents throughout the season-opening race resulting in a 24.7-average finish.
The 27-year-old has just three starts in the Xfinity Series between 2012 and 2019 respectively. He earned a top-10 in his series debut at his home track of Iowa Speedway in a car fielded by RAB Racing.
Last spring, Moffitt competed at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in a Xfinity Series car fielded by JR Motorsports and finished 13th after starting sixth.
For Our Motorsports, who also owns an ARCA Menards Series team, the chance to have Moffitt drive their vehicles and give an early assessment of their program is vital to the team’s initiative to be a productive fulltime Xfinity Series operation this season.
“I am excited to have Brett Moffitt join Our Motorsports for our debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Brett is a championship-winning driver and has a great track record for performance on the track,” said crew chief Williams.
“We’ve put together a great group of guys for the 2020 season, and I’m hopeful for a great run this year.
Sponsorship for Moffitt’s four-race deal is pending.
