2018 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series champion Brett Moffitt did big things with Our Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series this season and he’ll have a chance to continue that pace next season as he’ll drive the No. 02 Chevrolet Camaro full-time in 2021, the team announced Thursday afternoon.
Moffit, a native of Grimes, Iowa was tapped to drive the No. 02 Our Motorsports Chevrolet on a limited basis this season but eventually transitioned into a nearly full-time role with the organization, running 29 of the 33 Xfinity Series races.
Highlights of the year included a fifth-place outing at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in June, topped with six additional top-10 finishes, including his final top-10 of the year, a seventh at Kansas Speedway in October.
Moffitt will not return to GMS Racing the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series in 2021 and will instead shift his attention to the Chris Our-owned team.
“2020 was a learning year for the entire Our Motorsports operation and the program is now ready to step up to another level,” said Moffitt.
“I’m thankful for the last two seasons with GMS Racing and the support Maury Gallagher, Spencer Gallagher, Ron Booth, Mike Beam and the entire team gave me.”
Our Motorsports will continue their relationship with Chevrolet next season with Joe Williams maintaining the role of crew chief.
Williams says he is looking forward to continuing the team’s momentum with Moffitt next season.
“Our Motorsports has made great strides in 2020 and I’m really excited to carry that momentum into 2021 with Brett Moffitt behind the wheel,” said Williams.
“Brett is the kind of driver that makes us better as an organization and I am confident in what we can accomplish together next year.”
While a full sponsorship lineup has not been announced for next season, Fr8Auctions announced last week their commitment to partner with Moffit and Our Motorsports during both event weekends at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, respectively.
The 27-year-old not returning to GMS Racing next season is not a surprise.
Despite making the Championship 4 last weekend at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway, Moffitt and his No. 23 GMS Racing team failed to live up to expectations this season.
The 12-time Truck Series winner was nearly two laps from scoring his second drivers’ championship when the yellow flag came out and shuffled the field into NASCAR overtime.
Moffitt lost the lead and the championship on the restart and finished 10th. The title went to his GMS Racing teammate Sheldon Creed.
Still, it appears on the outside that the two parted ways on good terms.
“Brett Moffitt will not be returning to GMS Racing for the 2021 season,” said GMS Racing president Mike Beam. “We can’t thank Moffitt enough for his commitment to GMS over the past two years. We wish him the best of luck at Our Motorsports next year.”
The 2021 Xfinity Series season takes off with the NASCAR Racing Experience 300 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 13, 2021.
Moffitt will make his 33rd career Xfinity start in the season-opener and third at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
