JD Motorsports with Gary Keller announced Friday that Landon Cassill will return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series team this season for a full season effort driving the organizations’ No. 4 Chevrolet.
Cassill has been often dubbed as one of the sport’s talented free agents but he hasn’t competed full-time in any of NASCAR’s national divisions since the 2019 season.
“Johnny and his team in Gaffney mean the world to me, and it is a great honor to be back in the No. 4 Chevrolet,” said Cassill. “We’ve done so much together and look forward to accomplishing more this season. He’s got a great lineup of drivers to work with this season and I can’t wait to see what we all get done together.”
Cassill first joined JD Motorsports in 2013 and ushered into a full-time season in 2014 and most of 2015. He also returned to the team in 2018 and 2019 tallying 13 more races with the South Carolina-based team.
Overall, Cassill delivered seven top-10 finishes and placed 12th in the championship standings in 2014.
Since being released from StarCom Racing ahead of the 2020 season, Cassill spent much of the 2020 season idle, competing in four races for the underfunded and start-and-park Shepherd Racing Ventures team for car owner Morgan Shepherd.
Skipping Daytona, the team made starts at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway, Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway and Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway before the pandemic. Following the shutdown, the team made a start at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway in May – but did not compete in any further races.
In 11 years of Xfinity Series competition ahead of the 2021 season, Cassill has 144 starts with one pole and a best finish of third in the 2011 Xfinity season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway driving for Phoenix Racing and team owner James Finch and 14 top-10 finishes overall.
Sponsorship for Cassill’s effort will be announced at a later date.
Cassill is the third driver to be announced for JD Motorsports in 2021. Colby Howard and Jeffrey Earnhardt will also pilot cars for team owner Johnny Davis this season. Both ran partial Xfinity Series schedules in 2020.
