LAS VEGAS, Nev.: NASCAR Cup Series driver Joey Gase was transported to a local medical facility after a violent accident during Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway.
On Lap 92 in Stage 2, Gase was running at the back of the field, when he spun in Turn 2 as the left-rear tire came off his No. 15 NV Donate Life Chevrolet Camaro.
The derailment of the tire sent Gase’s automobile hard in the wall before coming to rest on the backstretch.
Gase was quickly attended too by NASCAR’s safety team and although he did not drop the window net of his race car, Gase could later be seen walking to the ambulance under his own power.
About an hour after the crash, NASCAR issued a statement that Gase was being taken from the infield care center to a local medical center for further evaluation.
A spokesperson for Rick Ware Racing said the team would provide updates on Gase’s condition as they became available.

The team is subject to penalty from NASCAR for the tire completely falling off the race car.
According to the NASCAR Cup Series rule, Any loss or separation of an improperly installed tire(s) | wheel(s) from the vehicle after exiting the team’s assigned pit box will result in a penalty.
In the past, the crew chief, tire changer and tire carrier are subject to a four-race suspension for such infraction. If suspended, the team members would not be able to return until Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, the penultimate race of the season in late October.
