RICHMOND, Va. (July 11, 2024) – Richmond Raceway announced today that Who’s Your Driver, a sober and safe driving initiative created by DRIVE SMART Virgina, will be the presenting partner for this summer’s NASCAR race weekend at Richmond Raceway on Aug. 10-11. It will officially be deemed the NASCAR Weekend at Richmond Raceway presented by Who’s Your Driver.
“We’re super appreciative to have Who’s Your Driver as the presenting partner of our summer race weekend,” said Richmond Raceway President Lori Collier Waran. “As we appreciate watching the best drivers in the world take on our historic racetrack under the lights, we also appreciate the designated drivers responsible for getting all our race fans in the Commonwealth home safe and sound.”
In addition to DRIVE SMART Virginia, the Who’s Your Driver campaign was created in conjunction with the Department of Motor Vehicles’ Highway Safety Office and Richmond Raceway. The campaign promotes safe and sober driving and encourages drivers to take their role seriously by buckling up, never driving under the influence, and doing everything they can to keep themselves and others protected on the roads.
“The fan experience at Richmond Raceway is unique and special. It is the perfect opportunity for us to engage with racing fans and remind them the importance of seat belts and planning ahead for a safe and sober ride from the track,” says Kristin Pettway, Executive Director of DRIVE SMART Virginia. “Ultimately, our goal is to ensure fans return home safely to their families after the excitement of the race weekend.”
Last year in Virginia, 293 people died in crashes involving a driver who had been drinking. The same year, 335 people who weren’t buckled up were killed; that represents 54% of all crash fatalities in vehicles equipped with safety restraints.
“Richmond Raceway fans always buckle up for a great night of racing. When the evening comes to a close, buckle up for a safe, sober ride home,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative. “When we plan ahead with a designated driver and wear our seat belts, everyone ends up in victory lane.”
The NASCAR Weekend at Richmond Raceway presented by Who’s Your Driver will kick off with the dramatic conclusion to the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series regular season in the Clean Harbors 250 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 10. The action will roll right into Sunday as drivers of the NASCAR Cup Series look to secure a playoff berth under the lights in the Cook Out 400 at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 11.
