LAS VEGAS, Nev.: Chris Buescher doesn’t know if he’ll return to drive the No. 37 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series next season.
On Friday afternoon at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway, the Prosper, Tex. native says he hasn’t signed a contract to return to the two-car organization for 2020 but did indicate that discussions about his future are “in progress.”
“Yeah, we’re getting there,” Buescher said of his contract status. “Working through everything. It’s a heck of a question to start off (laughs), but we’re in progress.
“I hope everything stays on track and we can get to the point where we are good to go. But it’s just that time of year again. It seems like more and more, it’s just a year-by-year thing for a lot of people. So, it’s just where we are at right now.”
The 26-year-old is in his third year of driving duties for JTG Daugherty Racing and after earning just two top-10 finishes last year, Buescher has tied for the most top-10 finishes in a Cup season thus far with four, a number he claimed in his first year of driving duties for JTG Daugherty in 2017.
While averaging a finish of 21st during the 2017 and 2018 seasons respectively, this year, the 2015 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion has improved his average finishing position by four spots (17.0) with 10 races remaining this season.
Many feel that Buescher’s consistent efforts in the No. 37 Chevrolet Camaro this season should warrant a fourth year of Cup Series competition with JTG, but Buescher was reluctant to offer any additional insight on the negotiation process or if he was entertaining ideas from other Cup Series race teams.
“We are talking and trying to get through this process,” Buescher added. “For me, it’s more of a private situation and we’re going through the motions here. We’ll know something in the next couple of weeks. It’s getting to that point.”
Entering Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas, Buescher is 20th in the championship standings after finishing 15th last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
