While Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway is Chris Buescher’s final planned NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race for Front Row Motorsports, the Roush Fenway Racing driver isn’t exactly ruling out a possible return.
“We’re in reevaluation mode,” Buescher told CATCHFENCE.com Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.
After superstar driver Kyle Busch was injured at Daytona in February, a game of musical chairs ensued. Joe Gibbs Racing named David Ragan a substitute driver, a role that will also end Sunday at Talladega.
Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brett Moffitt took Ragan’s place at Las Vegas, but when blood clots returned and sidelined Brian Vickers at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway, Moffit returned to the MWR seat thus carving the way for RFR to loan out their top XFINITY Series prospect.
Despite electing to sit out last weekend’s postponed Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond to focus on his XFINITY Series responsibilities, Buescher has four races under his belt with a best finish of 20th in his Cup debut at Auto Club Speedway.
Sunday, the Prosper, Texas native will drive for the same team that pulled off the upset Sprint Cup Series win at Talladega in 2013 with Ragan behind the wheel. Buescher feels given the right circumstances, he can repeat the feat.
In the two practice sessions at Talladega Friday, Buescher was third and 26th fastest respectively putting a major emphasis that the No. 34 CSX Ford Fusion may pull off the unexpected Sunday once again.
