BRISTOL, Tenn.: Darrell Wallace Jr., one of the favorites to contend for a million-dollar prize at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway Wednesday night for the NASCAR All-Star race was eliminated from the event after being crashed out just 18 laps into the first stage of the All-Star Open.
While battling Michael McDowell for third, Wallace and McDowell played bumper cars before McDowell appeared to turn left and hook the right rear of Wallace’s No. 43 World Wide Technology Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
The Richard Petty Motorsports driver climbed from his car uninjured but obviously furious about the incident that happened that kept him out of his second NASCAR All-Star event.
“Just disrespect,” Wallace said after being evaluated and released from the infield garage. “People say he’s one of the nicest guys in the garage. I can’t wait for the God-fearing text that he is going to send me about preaching and praise and respect. What a joke he is.”
Wallace carried over the rear bumper cover of his race and left on the steps of McDowell’s hauler letting the Front Row Motorsports team know he wasn’t happy with the on-track incident.
Should Wallace had not been able to win any of the three stages in the Open, Wallace was a favorite to capture the NASCAR fan-vote which automatically earns the driver a berth into exhibition event in the 20th and final position.
However, after finishing second in Stage 3, FOX Sports’ Mike Joy said that Clint Bowyer was able to surpass Wallace for the top voting spot overall within the last week.
NASCAR confirmed the swap in position between the two drivers.
None of that matters though. Wallace and his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet team head back to North Carolina with a destroyed race car.
“Everyone has an opinion of what happened,” said McDowell. “I have my side of things, Bubba has his and all of the fans have theirs, too. It’s one of the reasons NASCAR wanted to go to Bristol for the All-Star race. We created the excitement and now fans can make a difference and own a piece of history.”
