One of the bigger surprises of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season was veteran stars Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne failing to make the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
This year, the two experienced wheelmen find themselves in a similar predicament.
With just two races remaining until NASCAR’s playoffs, Kahne (52 points below the final Chase spot) and Biffle (-144) both need a win to get in.
They get their first of two chances at a final triumph in Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway (6 p.m. ET on NBC) where both have experienced past success.
Biffle has won at Darlington twice (2005-06) and claims three top-five and six top-10 finishes in 15 starts there.
“I’m really looking forward to Darlington,” Biffle said. “It’s my second best track, second favorite track to race at. We ran well there last year and I’m looking forward to going back, especially with Hooters on the car. This weekend is a good opportunity to get a solid finish and race for the win. I think we are capable of it.”
Kahne has never won at the track known as “The Lady in Black,” but has shown he can get around it fast. He has earned the pole position at Darlington four times and has three top-five, as well as four top-10 finishes there in 13 starts. In 2014, Kahne found himself outside of the Chase on Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta, but won the race to make the playoffs.
“Darlington has a great history and since I’ve been in the sport, I look forward to it every time because of how difficult it is to race there,” Kahne said. “I haven’t won there yet, but we’ve been close at times, and it would be great to do it this trip and in the LiftMaster throwback car. I think Darlington is the perfect track to race the throwback cars at and I’ve enjoyed it.”
