LAS VEGAS, Nev.: Hendrick Motorsports announced Friday evening that 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott will not compete in Sunday’s race at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway after suffering a left leg injury today while snowboarding in Colorado.
Elliott will undergo surgery this evening for the injury. His recovery status is unknown at this time.
“Chase’s health is our primary concern,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs.
“We hope to share another update later this weekend.”
Elliott stands 14th in the Cup championship standings ahead of Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 Presented by Jiffy Lube after finishing second last weekend at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway. The Dawsonville, Ga. native rebounded from a 38th-place finish in the season-opening DAYTONA 500.
Josh Berry, 32, the full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series driver for JR Motorsports will fill in for Elliott at Las Vegas. Driving for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports, he is a five-time race winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
The Hendersonville, Tenn.-native has made two previous starts at the Cup level in 2021 driving for Spire Motorsports at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway and Michigan International Speedway respectively.
