NASCAR CEO and Chairman Brian France was arrested Sunday night for aggravated driving while intoxicated and possession of a criminal-controlled substance in the 7th degree, according to a Sag Harbor Village (N.Y.) Police Department news release.
According to the release, France was arrested at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, held overnight and arraigned Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, where he was later released on his own recognizance.
“Mr. France was observed operating a 2017 Lexus northbound on Main Street failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign,“ the news release stated. “Upton traffic stop, it was determined that Mr. France was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition.
“Upton search of his person, due to a lawful arrest, Mr. France was in possession of oxycodone pills.”
Sag Harbor Village is on Long Island, New York, approximately 355 miles east of Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, site of Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race which saw Chase Elliott win his first career Cup Series race.
France has served as the CEO and chairman of NASCAR since 2003 following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who founded the organization in 1948.
NASCAR issued a statement Monday afternoon: “We are aware of an incident that occurred last night and are in the process of gathering information. We take this as a serious matter and will issue a statement after we have all of the facts.”
