In the most bizarrest of incidents at a race track in a long time, a deranged fan brought out the fourth and final caution at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway Saturday night.
On lap 330, a presumably intoxicated fan climbed to the top of the “catchfence” in Turn 4 and sat, watching the final race of the regular season, before the yellow flag was displayed and cited as “security,” as the official reason for the caution.
The fan, surprisingly, responded to authorities request to climb down from the fence, before being apprehended and taken into custody.
Drivers after the 26th race of the season weren’t shy to offer their thoughts on the incident.
“The Miller Lite was working,” said race winner Brad Keselowski. “That’s my reaction: Wow! That’s something. Wonder if he got a selfie?”
Denny Hamlin, the 21st place finisher wasn’t as playful with his words.
“Dumbass …That caution put me two laps down. If he wants to play in traffic, I say let him,” he said.
Richmond International announced Saturday night that the perpetrator was arrested by Henrico Police and charged with disorderly conduct and (being) drunk in public. The track said they were still reviewing their security measures and procedures.
