In a significant move for the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series, Hettinger Racing, led by longtime Late Model team owner Chris Hettinger, announced Tuesday they’ve purchased the assets of Bret Holmes Racing.
The team has hired former Truck Series champion Brett Moffitt to pilot the renumbered No. 4 Victory Custom Trailers Chevrolet Silverado RST for Friday night’s Zip Buy Now Pay Later 200 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Nov. 1 and at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway on Nov. 8.
Hettinger is a second-generation racer whose father, Jim, raced open-wheel Midgets and Sprint Cars and won two championships in 1984 and 1990, accolades that earned him a spot in the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
Hettinger began his racing career behind the wheel, winning in Midgets and Late Models before becoming a full-time team owner.
“Between the investments I’ve made over the years in our Late Model program and the opportunity to purchase Bret Holmes Racing, the time was right to grow Hettinger Racing into a team that can further drivers’ development by seamlessly transitioning them from Late Models to ARCA to Trucks,” Hettinger said.
“We’ll continue our Late Model program by running the zMAX CARS Tour, and we’ll run select ARCA and Truck Series races that fit best with our overall schedule.”
Hettinger said adding Moffitt, a 13-time Truck Series winner, will give the organization a head start in 2025.
“Brett Moffitt gives us a great opportunity to get a head start on 2025. He’s proven himself in the Truck Series and his feedback from this week’s race at Martinsville and next week’s race at Phoenix will be invaluable,” he said.
“We’ve had a lot to do in a short period of time to get ready for these last two Truck Series races, and we’re confident the effort we’re putting in now will pay dividends next year.”
Moffitt’s experience across NASCAR’s top three series, combined with his Truck Series success, provides Hettinger Racing valuable insights for both Martinsville and Phoenix as they assess their Truck Series future.
The Grimes, Iowa, native captured the 2018 Truck Series title with Hattori Racing Enterprises, winning a series-high six races that season, including the final two at Phoenix and Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.
The 32-year-old racer has competed in two Truck Series races this season at Kansas Speedway and Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway respectively for TRICON Garage. He earned a season-high fifth-place finish at Kansas.
“I said earlier this year that when it came to racing, I wanted quality over quantity, and the equipment Chris Hettinger already had was second to none,” said Moffitt, who also owns 10 wins in the ARCA Menards Series East.
“With his purchase of Bret Holmes Racing, Chris’ operation is scaled up and ready to tackle the Truck Series.
“I feel like the potential is there, and I’m really looking forward to driving their Chevy and getting Hettinger Racing prepared for the next year.”
The quick and unexpected sale of Bret Holmes Racing arrived after the team earned its second top-10 finish of the season with a ninth-place result at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway earlier this month.
Holmes, a native of Munford, Ala., said last week in a statement that he hopes to secure a ride in the Truck Series for the 2025 season.
As Holmes eyes new opportunities for 2025, Hettinger Racing’s acquisition marks a fresh chapter, bringing new possibilities for both team and driver in the Truck Series.
