AVONDALE, Ariz. – A purchase of the now defunct Rockingham Speedway could be near, CATCHFENCE.com has learned.
The historic 1.0-mile oval has sat dormant since the end of the 2013 season.
While the track continues to sit in limbo since a court-ordered deadline to sell or auction off the race track nearly seven months ago, signs of a potential overtake of the facility. A new group of ownership, who apparently is “focused on bringing racing back to the facility,” could bring hope to race fans who still cling to hope to see racing return at the Richmond County, NC track.
Former ARCA Racing Series champion Andy Hillenburg purchased the facility in 2007 and hosted several racing events at the track, including the ARCA Racing Series, CARS Pro Cup Series and UARA Series.
NASCAR hosted two NCWTS races in 2012 and 2013 bringing the NASCAR name back to “The Rock” for the first since hosting its last NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in the fall of 2004.
