While NASCAR was honed in on the Lone Star state of Texas this past weekend, the buzz around the garage area swirled back over 1,000 miles to Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway, where rumors continue to mount over its future.
The Richmond County Daily Journal reported earlier this week that the inaugural season for the X-Cup Series, which was supposed to be housed at Rockingham “is at least temporarily on hold,” sources have told CATCHFENCE.com that activity at the historic 1.0-mile oval may not to be far off the horizon.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source tells CATCHFENCE.com that track preparations are underway with the intent to put race cars back on its surface in some capacity by this summer.
The source also indicated that the proposed X-Cup Series, which said it planned to hold 10 events at Rockingham this year has been eliminated from the track’s radar at this time.
Rockingham Speedway has not hosted a national series event since the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series raced in Apr. 2013, an event won by Sprint Cup driver Kyle Larson. The facility hosted its final Cup race in Feb. 2004 with Matt Kenseth earning the victory.
CATCHFENCE.com will have more on this story as it develops.
