NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series driver Spencer Davis will not compete in Friday’s Henry Ford Health System 200 at Michigan International Speedway after the Dawsonville, Ga. native tested positive for the coronavirus Thursday morning, a team spokesperson confirmed to CATCHFENCE.com.
NASCAR also confirmed the positive test for Davis to CATCHFENCE.com.
The team says they will withdraw their No. 11 entry from the 11th race of the season.
“With 2020 starting off as a lot of first for myself on many levels, starting a truck team, and venturing out with the start of a new business it seemed to be going well,” said Davis. “But with the start of the pandemic, it has changed how we have to stay alert to keep everyone safe and healthy. With that being said we have been taking all the proper steps during traveling for races and at the events.
“This week I had to go take tests and one positive test result is keeping us from racing Michigan. I support the protocols in place by the CDC and NASCAR and plan on taking the correct steps to come back to the track.”
Davis is 18th in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series championship standings after nine races with a season-best finish of 12th in his season debut at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in February.
Davis is the second full-time NASCAR driver in the sport’s top-three national divisions to have a confirmed positive test for COVID-19.
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson tested positive prior to the Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last month but returned to competition a week later at Kentucky Speedway after producing two negative test results.
The Spencer Davis Motorsports team is following protocol with NASCAR and says they plan to return to competition as soon Davis is medically cleared.
In 18 career NGROTS starts, Davis, 21 has three top-10 finishes, including a career-best eighth-place finish last July at Kentucky Speedway with his family-owned team.
