ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. – Under cloudy skies, open-wheeler James Davison led the way in final NASCAR XFINITY Series practice at Road America (Wisc.) in preparation for Sunday’s Johnsonville 180.
After practicing 11th quickest in his No. 20 Hollinger Motor Sports Toyota, Davison found additional speed in his Joe Gibbs Racing entry to outpace Justin Marks for the top spot.
Davison is making his second start of the year after finishing fourth at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course two weeks ago. In addition to his stint in XFINITY, the Australian also competed in this year’s Indianapolis 500 driving for Dale Coyne Racing.
Behind Davison and Marks came Austin Cindric who continues to impress ahead of his XFINITY Series debut for Team Penske. Cole Custer and Brennan Poole rounded out the top-five.
Like the first practice, the final XFINITY 55-minute session produced some new names in the top-10.
Roush Fenway Racing’s Ryan Reed was sixth with Justin Allgaier, Daniel Hemric, Casey Mears and Blake Koch rounding out the top-10.
Other notables included: Blake Koch (11th), Elliott Sadler (15th), Christopher Bell (17th), William Byron (19th), Josh Bilicki (20th), Matt Tifft (21st) and Dylan Lupton (25th).
Like the previous session, only minor incidents stalled on-track time activity. Both Spencer Gallagher and Parker Kligerman experienced fuel issues, while Nicholas Hammann spun in the gravel trap in Turn 3 ending the session two minutes prematurely.
Qualifying for the 40-car field is set for 10:45 a.m. Sunday, with the 45-lap race set to roll just after 3:00 p.m. ET on NBC, the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.
