AUSTIN, Texas: FRS Racing announced Sunday afternoon that Kyle Weatherman has been tapped to drive the team’s No. 96 Chevrolet Camaro for their highly anticipated NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in the April 1 running of the ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway.
Weatherman, 25, started his 2023 Xfinity Series season in Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway with Our Motorsports and earned a season-high 16th-place finish in the Alsco Uniforms 300 aboard the No. 02 Chevrolet.
FRS Racing is owned by Colin Fern, a former executive at Brandonbilt Motorsports. Over the offseason, Fern acquired equipment from the team previously driven by Brandon Brown.
“Really excited to make the first-ever start for Collin and FRS Racing,” said Weatherman. “I’ve worked with Collin for the past few weeks while he was spotting for me and I am excited for him to wear the owner’s hat this next weekend in Richmond!
“We have been working really hard on this No. 96 Chevrolet for the past week and I am ready to get it on track.”
Fern is banking on Weatherman’s talent to nurture a successful Xfinity Series debut for the part-time team.
“Kyle (Weatherman) has shown his talent week in and week out in whatever equipment he is in,” said Fern.
“I am excited for the opportunity to have him in the No. 96. I have had the luxury of working with him over the past month and his knowledge, talent and work ethic is unmatched.”
The team has partnered with Elkton, Virginia-based BrewHaha Brewing Company as the primary partner of the No. 96 Chevrolet Camaro.
In 88 Xfinity Series starts, the Wentzville, MO native has delivered three top-10 finishes, most recently for Jesse Iwuji Motorsports at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July 2022.
Matt Weber will crew chief the Richmond effort.
Following Richmond, FRS Racing hopes to return to the Xfinity Series circuit at either Darlington (S.C.) Raceway or Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May.
Blaine Perkins who parted ways with SS GreenLight Racing earlier this week is the top candidate to drive the No. 02 for Our Motorsports at Richmond.
